The Signs and Symptoms of Thyroid Disease
The thyroid gland is located in the neck and governs the metabolism of the human body. The thyroid gland is directly responsible for providing the requirements needed to break down food eaten and for determining whether or not the food will be used as an immediate energy source or just store it for future needs. Sometimes, the thyroid gland doesn’t function properly and a thyroid disease develops. There are two kinds of thyroid disease, namely hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. People who suffer from hyperthyroidism experience the effects of a hyper or an extremely active thyroid gland. On the other hand, people who suffer from hypothyroidism have lower than the necessary levels of thyroid hormones.

There are many forms of hyperthyroidism, the most common of which is Grave’s disease, an autoimmune disorder that causes a person’s immune system to attack his thyroid gland and make it produce excessive thyroid hormones. There are also many forms of hypothyroidism, the most common of which is Hashimoto’s disease, also an autoimmune disease and which causes heart problems, goiter, birth defects, and depression. Hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism each have their own set of thyroid disease symptoms.
The thyroid disease symptoms of hyperthyroidism include the following: feeling warm even in cold weather, increased perspiration, trembling hands, accelerated heartbeat, loose stool, significant weight loss, weakness and/or fatigue, irritability, anxiety, eye problems, menstrual changes in women, and infertility in both sexes. The thyroid disease symptoms of hypothyroidism include the following: feeling cold even in warm weather, dry skin and hair, constipation, infrequent bowel movement, rapid weight gain, fatigue, depression, and menstrual changes in women.
