There is a fine line between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency. Alcohol abusers, also termed as problem drinkers, are people who drink more than they should on a regular basis. They know they can be destructive when they drink so they sometimes set limits. When they lose control of themselves and the amount of drinking they do, the condition progresses into alcohol dependency. The common symptoms of alcohol dependency are similar to those of alcohol abuse, but they are more serious and need more extensive treatment.

Because many of the signs and symptoms of alcohol dependency overlap with those of alcohol abuse, the first question that can determine the difference in perspective is this: How serious is the drinking? When a person becomes evidently dependent on alcohol, in that he can no longer think of anything else but having a drink, he is displaying the primary symptom of alcohol dependency.
A person dependent on alcohol has built up a level of tolerance to alcohol, so he must drink larger quantities to feel the effect he desires. He establishes certain patterns that involve alcohol intake, such as drinking alcohol with every meal. When this pattern is disturbed, he feels greatly annoyed and can go on the offensive aggressively. Moreover, when a person dependent on alcohol tries to stop, he experiences withdrawal symptoms because his system is shock at the substance’s sudden absence. He is also prone to having blackouts and may not remember recent conversations and experiences. These are the common symptoms of alcohol dependency.
