Hives are generally an allergic reaction to something, such as food or a medication, but sometimes it is an allergic reaction to bug bites or dander. Do you think you have Hives? If so, you’d have itchiness and swelling on the surface of the skin with red- or skin-colored welts with defined edges. Most are round or oval in shape.

The causes for hives are different for everyone. Some common causes include medications, shellfish, fish, nuts, eggs, milk, pollen, insect bites, animal dander, an infection (such as mononucleosis, lupus, or leukemia) emotional stress, extreme cold, or excessive perspiration.

You can clearly see the hives by looking at the skin. They will go away on their own, but calamine lotion is very helpful, as is antihistamines. Stay away from hot baths or showers and do not wear tight-fighting clothing over the hives. They are basically harmless, but a strong irritation. However, they can cause complications like an swollen airway or airway obstruction. Call 911 in this circumstance.
