What is an abscess?

An abscess is a collection of pus that can be located anywhere on the body. It is generally swollen or inflamed. Abscesses can appear both on the body and IN the body. They are easy to identify when they can be seen on the skin - when they are elsewhere, it is much more difficult to identify them. When they occur on organs, only an x-ray can show their presence.

What causes an abscess is that it is a localized area of the body were the  white blood cells have moved through blood vessel walls into an area of infection and collect the infection itself. The pus is a collection of fluid with living or dead white blood cells, bacteria, and dead tissue.

Most abscesses are easily treated with antibiotics.
