Hives or urticaria is a type of skin rash or allergy. This skin condition is usually an allergic reaction to foods taken in, particularly peanuts, eggs, tree nuts, shellfish, milk, wheat or soy. They may also be caused by some medications like antibiotics and sulfa drugs. They could also be infections on the skin or insect bites and stings. Exposure to heat, cold or dirty water may also cause the formation of hives. Contact with certain types of garments can also cause hives.
There are several medical symptoms of hives. Hives are usually raised welts on the skin. They could be reddish or pinkish and are very itchy. They could appear alone or in numbers and may vary in sizes. Some may be as small as a few millimeters while others may be as large as some centimeters in diameter. Worse, they can come together to form a very large hive that may cover certain parts of your body.
Additional medical symptoms of hives include stingy, painful feeling. They may also form bruises on the skin. Additionally, a person with hives may have other symptoms that indicate what is causing the formation of hives.
These medical symptoms of hives usually come and go. Older ones usually go away in a few hours only to be replaced by another batch on the other parts of your body but they do not usually last for more than 24 hours. If this has become the case, there may be other reasons for the formation hives and medical attention should be sought.
