HYPOGLYCEMIA AND ITS SYMPTOMS
Hypoglycemia is a medical condition that results from low blood sugar. This is generally brought on by the treatment of diabetes but can also be caused by other factors outside diabetes treatment.
Signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia start early on and may be different from one person to another. Its severity may also vary among people and may be resolved once the blood sugar returns to its normal level.
The hypoglycemic reaction of the body starts when its sugar level reaches the 70s. The first signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia are called adrenergic symptoms because they are connected to the response of the nervous system to hypoglycemia. These include nervousness, sweating, intense hunger, trembling, weakness, palpitations and trouble in speaking. Fainting may also occur and there may be pallor in the mouth, paleness of the skin and dilation of the pupils.
As the condition progresses, signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia also intensify. There are occurrences of headaches, difficulty in concentration, disorientation, mental confusion, dizziness, double vision and staggering walk. There may also be instances of muscle twitching, restlessness and manic depression. Hypoglycemic people cannot manage stress very well and frequently have negative outlooks. They may also have obsessive-compulsive behaviors and are usually self-driven up to the point of exhaustion.
There is also the constant craving for food, specifically food rich in salt and sugar. During night time, hypoglycemia may also ensue and cause the patient to have nightmares and perspire so much.
Hypoglycemia is related to the much worse medical condition called hypoadrenocorticism. If untreated, hypoglycemia might result to this and may worsen the condition of the patient. Thus, on the initial onslaught of these symptoms, medical help should be sought.
