KNOW THY HERNIA

Hernia is known as the medical condition wherein the contents of a body cavity protrude out of the area where it is normally enclosed. These contents are usually parcels of the intestines or abdominal fatty tissues. There are actually many types of hernia but the most commonly known are the hernias of the lower torso or the abdominal wall hernia.

Medical symptoms of hernia can be very varied. They can range from a painless lump to the painful swelling of tissues that cannot be pushed back to the abdomen. For different types of hernia, there are also different symptoms.

Reducible hernias are the type when the bulging tissues can be pushed back to its normal container. For this type of hernia, the symptoms include a new lump in the groin or other abdominal wall area. there is also the presence of mild pain when the are is touched. Further, an increase in lump size can be noticed when in standing position or when there is pressure in the affected area. Here, the fatty tissue can be pushed back to the abdomen.

Other medical symptoms of hernia actually run along the same lines. For irreducible hernia, the previous medical symptoms can also be experienced but there is more intense pain in the bulging area and the tissue cannot be pushed back to the abdomen anymore. Irreducible hernia is also called incarcerated hernia and may lead to strangulation. Other symptoms include bowel obstructions such as nausea and/or vomiting.

The worse kind of hernia, the strangulated hernia, has a slight difference with the irreducible hernia. This is merely a worsening of the irreducible case in which the blood supply in the entrapped intestine has already been cut off. Pain is always present and is often accompanied by nausea and vomiting. The affected person may also experience feeling ill or feverish. For this kind, surgery is imperative.
